1. Clean the whole house, not one room at time

If you choose one task (dusting, vacuuming, mopping) and do the same task in every room in the house, cleaning is much more effective than cleaning the kitchen, the bathrooms and then the bedrooms. Doing it this way prevents you from feeling like you're in an endless cleaning cycle, repeatedly starting the same task.

 

2. Gather all your cleaning tools in a caddy

Having everything you need to clean in one portable place makes it much easier to get the work done, whether it's a caddy, bucket or tote. While you clean, you won't waste time searching for tools, and don't have to worry about collecting them before your next go around.

 

3. Clear the clutter

Go from room to room and pick up the clutter before you even begin cleaning. When you pick up each item, consider whether you should put it away, toss it or donate it. Magazines, well-read paperbacks, old sneakers.

 

4. Dust and vacuum

Make sure the ceiling fans are turned off before you begin dusting. Focus your dusting on furniture tops and shelf undersides, on handrails, picture frames, knickknacks, and TV screens. 5. Wipe mirrors and glass

6. Disinfect countertops and surface areas

From countertops, appliances and cabinets to doorknobs, light switches, TV remotes and phones, go through your house and wipe down the hard surfaces. Some of those surfaces, especially the ones that could deliver germs to the fingers and faces of people, should be disinfected. Make a non-toxic disinfection solution by mixing a cup of water with one-fourth to half a cup of white or apple cider vinegar.

 

7. Focus on tubs, sinks and toilets

Spray the cleaner on the kitchen sink and then on the sinks, tubs and toilets in the bathroom. To dissolve dirt and stains, let it sit for a few minutes so that the cleaner has time. 8. Sweep, then mop

Sweep the floors of the kitchen and bathrooms. Start mopping from the farthest corner of the room and move backwards (that is, don't mop into a corner) toward the doorway. Each time you complete a 4-by-4-foot area, rinse the mop.

 

9. Keep moving when you vacuum

Don't worry, when you vacuum, about getting every nook and cranny. Just keep moving through the house, running the vacuum in a single pass through every carpeted room.

 

Each week, some tasks don't need to be done. These include furniture waxing, window cleaning, and rugs and bath mats for the washing area. Inspect and use your own judgment on these accessories.

 

10. Don’t forget to routinely wash your cleaning tools

Retaining your cleaning tools is an often overlooked part of cleaning the house. It is much less effective to use a dirty mop or a vacuum with a full bag, and you will end up spending more time trying to clean.
